The St. Anne-Oratory Council 6756 was able to rent 2 Pro Life billboards to support our belief that life begins at conception. The attached picture of the billboard will hopefully encourage women who are considering abortion to reconsider how their action will impact a life.

We wish to thank those who generously supported our November breakfast and Lamar Advertising. The billboards are located in Rock Hill on the south side of Cherry Rd west of Cherry Park and Saluda just south of Rt. 901 (Heckle).

Grand Knight, Dennis Peasenell recently presented 2 Shining Armor Awards in recognition of outstanding service to the Kngihts of Columbus over the last 12 months.

Ray Howard
We are proud to recognize Sir Knight, Ray Howard for his accomplishments in the first year as a Knight and member of the St. Anne-Oratory Council #6756.
Ray and his family were working for our Council on fundraisers before he was even a Knight. He has participated at our football concessions, breakfasts, fish fries and Operation Hope fundraisers.
In his first year as a Knight, Ray attained the highest level of Knighthood as a fourth Degree with the title of Sir Knight.
He has volunteered to lead our PR program as our Council's PR director and has smoothly assumed the responsibility for our newsletter and has co-led the Knight Ministry Fair.
Ray is also a member of St. Anne Parish Financial Council.
Ray demonstrates what an active Knight should and can be and is a real asset to our Council.
We congratulate SK Ray Howard on his accomplishments in his first year as a Knight and thank him for his service

Rick Thomas

We are proud to recognize Bother, Rick Thomas for his accomplishments in the first year as Knight and member of the St. Anne-Oratory Council #6756.
Rick became a Knight in October 2010 and made his 2ND Degree three months later. He has an outstanding record of participation in the activities of our Council since becoming a Knight.
Rick has worked at all of our breakfasts and fish fries and has participated in many of our football concessions.
He sold 11 books of tickets in our statewide charity drive and ahas volunteered at all of our Operation Hope solicitations for the intellectually challenged.
Rick is also an Altar Server at the 7:30AM Mass whenever possible.
Rick demonstrates what an active Knight should and can be and is real asset to our Council and Brothers.
We congratulate Brother Rick Thomas on his accomplishments in his first year as a Knight and thank him for his service.

Lenten message from our Chaplain

Dear Brother Knights,
We have just begun the great season of Lent. There are many ways to describe the season: The Church’s Annual Retreat, Spiritual Spring Training, Season of Penance and Almsgiving. However one may describe the season, it is fundamentally a time of spiritual renewal for the individual and the church collectively as the people of God and disciples of Jesus. The goal is to look at oneself, take stock of one’s spiritual flab and undertake disciplines to flex one’s spiritual muscles into shape so that one may conform more into the image of the Obedient Son, Jesus, the Christ. Hence some describe the season as Spiritual Spring Training.
The day of this writing is Thursday after Ash Wednesday. The front page of the Rock Hill Herald featured the distribution of Ashes as observed at St. Anne’s and other Churches around the country. The articles focused on people giving things up and reaching out through almsgiving which are both commendable and traditional disciplines for Lent. In this article I wish to share the reflections I came to this year on Ash Wednesday.
Perhaps, we can recall our own initiating into the discipline of Lent. As children we were taught to give up candy for Lent. Children love candy and so it was a natural choice for our parents and teachers to suggest this to us. Note: they never suggested giving up Vegetables. (That is a need and not a want). Many adults continue in their Lenten sojourns to give up something they like for Lent; perhaps not candy anymore for obvious reasons. On Fat Tuesday I was at a Mardi Gras dinner party and I heard parishioners mention that they were going to give up chocolate and wine. Another mentioned that he was going to give up meat and another said she would give up bread. A brother priest chimed in, “now don’t go too far”. The priest was on the mark because bread is more of a need than a want. We often remember the training involved in giving up something we like but my experience has been that many people seem to forget the other part of the training: That is to give up something you like so that with the money saved you can share with others who don’t have anything to eat. The idea was to fast from want to share with others something they needed; to be less centered on self and reach out to others. The fasting was tied to almsgiving. The practice or discipline was designed to help us take on the image of God in our lives wherein we are more and more centered on care for another than focused on ourselves and our wants. Jesus emptied himself of his divinity and took on our humanity so he could help show us the way to be more faithful to the Father. Let me suggest that when considering one’s Lenten discipline be careful. I know one woman who elected to give up coffee for Lent. After a week and a half she was so distraught. She wanted to know what to do. See she was successful in giving up the coffee, however she was disturbed by the fact that she seem to be worse off in her spiritual journey. Just before she came to see me, she had snapped at her husband; was more irritable, than usual, with the kids in getting them off to school; and she found herself more prone to biting off the heads of her co-workers. I suggested that, since coffee is not a bad thing and perhaps it’s a good thing that God wants her to have, perhaps, she could consider some other want to forego. After all, giving up the coffee seems to be giving her more data for the confessional. So this situation goes to the heart of what I am proposing. First of all, be sure the sacrifice is a want and not a need. Dietary fasts and abstinence are commendable, but I propose another consideration: Sacrifice some personal time and visit a friend or relative who is alone and could use the affirmation of a warm visit. (After writing this, I read in the Herald that some people said they were giving up Facebook and time on the internet to spend quality time in being actually present to people.) Perhaps couples that are so taken with time for children, work and other activities may consider making some time for themselves to build and strengthen their spousal love. One may need to make room for some time alone for prayer, scripture reading or some other spiritual book that will help one grow deeper in love with God.
Many of us are taken easily into the bad activity of gossip perhaps we could watch how we speak; refrain from gossip, from negative talk about others. If one is in managerial or supervisory capacity be careful in critiquing. Constructively offer the critique and most of all be sure the critique is with that person involved and not 5 others around. Remember only the supervisee can change the behavior. He or she may not even be aware that his or her behavior is an issue. So healthy critique can be an act of affirmation. Living in a world where there is so much negativity or talk that tears down perhaps curbing our participation in the negative talk and sharing constructive critique and affirmation can build up the communities we find ourselves in and so contributing to a healthy and wholesome environment would be a worthwhile discipline to engage in this Lent. So there you have it. My proposal of an alternative spin on traditional disciplines of Lent. By no means is it exhaustive but this is a start.
Called by virtue of our baptism as Christians and as Knights of Columbus, and soldiers of Christ, let us together join the charge of the Lenten Spring Training. Let the choice of our chosen discipline be one that truly changes us. Keep in mind that often a non- dietary discipline undertaken is often a bad habit one is attempting to change so a return visit after Easter is not advisable. Instead when Easter arrives the joy and the glory is in that for Forty Days one has met God’s grace, cooperated with it and succeeded in changing oneself into a stronger disciple of Jesus. With the Victorious Christ you will have died to the old and become a new creation in Christ and our conversion becomes true testimony to the expression of our Fraternity,

Sir Knight Bob Martin is Knight of the Year

Sir Knight BOB MARTIN
Sir Knight Bob Martin is a Past Grand Knight, Current Trustee, and Church Director of our Council. He is also the Captain of our Father Henry Tevlin Assembly 2108. Bob has been a Knight for 9 years and is a very active leader of our major fundraisers. Bob is also the captain of our First Degree ceremonies.
His many activities include:
1. Led our football concessions at all of our panther football home games. Our Council generates approximately $9,000 in income per year through these concessions which largely goes to support of our council home.
2. Bob and his family have led our “Keep Christ in Christmas” card and magnet sales which generated $400 in net income.
3. Led our RSVP program to support our seminarians with a $500 donation.
4. Leads our Lenten Fish Frys at St. Anne Parish.
5. Chair of our Knight’s support of St. Anne International Fair.
6. Chair of our knight’s support of St. Anne, St. Vincent DePaul Annual Spaghetti Dinner and Fundraiser.
7. Bob is in charge of St. Anne RCIA in support of new parishioners and Catholic members.
8. Eucharistic Minister, Lector, and strongly supports all church activities including Perpetual Adoration.
9. Leader of our council’s support for the Fr. Michael J. McGivney organization.
10. Organized and led the Parish Patriotic Rosary.
11. Volunteers at our parish blood drive, Dorothy Day’s Soup Kitchen, and Operation Hope solicitation.
12. On the board of directors for our council home and manages the budget.
13. Manages our council home’s financial and maintenance needs.

Sir Knight Bob Martin has set the example of an active Knight in our Council. His leadership and dedication to the principles of the order typifies what a Knight in good standing really means.

2010/2011 Family of the Year Award

THE DOWLING FAMILY:
Bill Dowling and his wife Lucille have led our knight’s breakfasts this year. We have had a very successful breakfast in September for the oratory and our October Breakfast proceeds went to the Boy Scouts. Our breakfast in November was for St. Anne Youth Pro Life trip. The January breakfast was for the support our oratory seminarians and the February breakfast was for the girl scouts. We are planning a breakfast in April for the ultrasound initiative and in May for our St. Anne school scholarship. What a wonderful group of charitable giving for our council in the amount of about $1800 so far through February.
Being in charge of our breakfasts is hard work and requires much dedication, planning and logistics. A Knight cannot do it without his lady’s support and Lucille sees that all runs smoothly and everyone is busy. The rest of the Dowling family including Bill’s son, William and daughter, Amanda also pitch in at all breakfasts.
Our council thanks the Dowling family for their charitable service, leadership and energy in making our breakfasts successful.

Council 6756 Shares Their Earned Bounty

Knights of Columbus St. Anne – Oratory Council 6756 has been busy with its activities to support chosen charities, and on June 21, 2010 had the pleasure of distributing the fruits of those labors.

At its Awards Night at The Rock Hill Oratory in June, the Council distributed $1000 each to the York County Family Connection and the Special Olympics, the result of funds raised from its Operation Hope efforts, chaired by Brother Rene Zayas. A young Special Olympics Gold Medal winner was present for the event, and treated attendees to a speech about his life, which all agree will serve to inspire in future efforts to raise funds.

Additionally, that evening Sir Knight Larry Facelli was proud to present 380 stuffed animals collected in a joint effort he chaired for the Council and the Father Henry Tevlin Assembly 2108. The toys, collected from members of York County's Catholic parishes, were distributed to the York County Sheriff’s Department and the Rock Hill Police Department to provide comfort to children in times of crisis.

Also distributed were the proceeds of a Family BBQ at St. Anne Church on June 12th, chaired by Brother Joe Berger, with a profit of almost $1000 donated by the Council to St. Anne Church.

Chaplain's Corner for April

Dear Brother Knights,

You are invited to renew and relive the greatest week of the year, Holy Week. Your presence is urgently requested as the Lord Himself is calling you.

On Palm Sunday we will walk with Jesus waving palm branches to hail Jesus as the saving Lord as He enters into the new Jesrusalem that is the church. Jesus willingly offers Himself for our redemption and we hail Him for such love and mercy.

On Holy Thursday we gather as the family of the Lord to make present Jesus of the Last Supper now really present again in the sacrifice of the Mass. Jesus teaches us the way of Christian service. Jesus ordains the first priests of the New Testament. Jesus then gives Himself to us in Holy Communion; He knits us together in the union of His very self.

Good Friday finds us at the feet of the crucified One as the story of total love, forgiveness, and mercy is poured out upon us. And we respond by kissing the cross after we have relived total self giving. Then we receive the Lord into a heart broken with sorrow for our lack of love.

We then wait and ought to spend some time in quiet contemplation. We wait for the cry of victory, the Easter Vigil as night falls upon the earth. Earth is wedded to heaven in the exultation that Jesus who once was dead is now risen gloriously. He has triumphed over sin and death and has redeemed each one of us.

You are invited to the holiest week of the year! The Lord is calling you!

Chaplain's Corner -- Lent 2009

The holy and challenging season of Lent is upon us. Lent is springtime in our spiritual lives. Jesus says to us to come to Him with all our burdens and He will show us the way of the cross to carry them, not alone, but together with Him. During this period of preparation for Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday, and Easter Sunday (Mark these days on your calendars to participate in the liturgy of those days.) I suggest you select one meaningful penance (giving up) and one meaningful extra work.

Church law tells those who have reached their 18th birthday and have not yet reached the day after their 59th birthday to fast which means one full meal and two lesser meals to maintain strength -- but these must not equal another full meal -- on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.

It also tells those who have reached their 14th birthday and then on to abstain from meats on Ash Wednesday and all Fridays of Lent.

Church law also states: “On these days (of Penance), the faithful are in a special manner to devote themselves to prayer, to engage in works of piety and charity, to deny themselves, by fulfilling their obligations more faithfully and especially by observing the fast and abstinence ...”

Your Help is Needed to Stop FOCA!

At the request of our Chaplain, Fr. William, we are posting this information, published by the National Committee for a Human Life Amendment, so all may be aware of "the most serious threat to pro-life policies ever -- the 'Freedom of Choice Act," or FOCA. This bill would create a right to abortion the government could not limit and bring about a national abortion policy far worse than the U.S. Supreme Court's Roe v. Wade decision. For the first time, abortion would become an entitlement the government must fund and promote. Citizens would lose the freedom they now have to enact even modest regulation of the abortion industry. FOCA would:

Eliminate regulations that protect women from unsafe clinics and unscrupulous abortionists

Force American taxpayers to fund abortions

Force every state to allow partial-birth abortions -- its sponsors have said a primary purpose of the bill is to ensure that killing partially born children will again be permitted nationwide

Run roughshod over the conscience rights of physicians, nurses and hospitals that oppose abortion on religious, moral or ethical grounds

Strip parents of their right and responsibility to be involved in their minor daughter's abortion decision

Simply put, if FOCA becomes law, it will put at risk all the widely-supported laws that for 35 years have promoted women's health, ensured informed consent, protected minors, ensured parental involvement, safe-guarded rights of conscience, and respected the desire of most citizens not to support abortion with their tax dollars.

FOCA also explicity encourages challenges in court against any law or regulation that protects unborn children and their mothers and families in the abortion context, promising a virtual cottage industry of lawsuits.

And FOCA's tentacles would reach beyond federal policies to every state and local law or regulation having to do with abortion.

FOCA is without doubt the most radical abortion legislation ever considered in the United States.

Abortion supporters have been trying to pass FOCA since 1989 -- and now we have a Congress more disposed than any in recent years to pass the bill, and a new President who has said he will sign the measure into law.

YOUR VOICE IS NEEDED MORE THAN EVER! At this time of serious national challenges, Americans should unite to serve the good of all, born and unborn -- not single out the most defenseless human beings for an expanded attack on their lives.

Please urge your federal elected officials to oppose FOCA or any similar measure, and to retain laws against the federal funding and promotion of abortion.
FOCA embodies the public policy goals of pro-abortion groups. These groups will promote the bills passage directly, and advance its agenda by working to reverse pro-life laws one at a time.

We have a new spiritual leader for the Diocese of Charleston. He is Bishop-elect, Msgr. Robert E. Guglielmone, a priest of the Diocese of Rockville Center, NY. He was ordained a priest on April 8, 1978. Up to his appointment by Pope Benedict, he was the rector of St. Agnes Cathedral in Rockville Center, NY.

Before entering the seminary, he taught high school for five years. Scouting has been an important part of ministry in his priesthood. Let us praise and thank God, and pray for Robert.

Now is the time to look forward to March 25, 2009 when Msgr. Robert Guglielmone will be ordained Bishop and installed at the thirteenth ordinary of the Diocese of Charleston. The 7:00 p.m. ceremony will take place in Charleston. March 25th is the Solemnity of the Annunciation of the Lord, the day Jesus took on a human nature in the womb of the Blessed Virgin Mary. We will be in the fourth week of Lent, but the feast is of a higher rank than the Lenten day.

This is a great time to talk to your children and grandchildren about how the bishop of a diocese, the ordinary, is the spiritual leader for all in the diocese, both cleric and lay. He is the chief shepherd of the flock of South Carolina as he teaches, sanctifies, and rules in the Name of Our Savior Jesus Christ under and selected by Pope Benedict.

Things that have been on hold can now get moving for the honor and glory of God and the good of the People of God.

Oratory Council 6756 Knights of Columbus will be serving breakfast in the Fr. William Pentis Family Life Center at St. Anne Catholic Church in Rock Hill on Sunday, January 18th beginning after the 7:30 Mass and continuing throughout the morning.

A breakfast of eggs, bacon, sausage, hash browns, toast, pancakes, juice and coffee will be served. Cost: Donation of whatever you can afford.

Bring your family . . . bring your neighbors . . . bring your friends! Proceeds from this breakfast will go to help the Cancer Association in York County.
